Tangle

In its verb form “tangle” means to draw a tangle. You tangle a tangle, and in that process create Zentangle art. We began using this work as a verb to avoid using “Zentangle” as a verb.  Avoid using "Zentangle" as a verb because  it is one way that weakens the trademark status of the name.
In its noun form, this word is used as a replacement for “pattern.” However, although all tangles are patterns, not all patterns are tangles. Some patterns do not lend themselves to being created in a Zentangle way. An example of this is Celtic Knotting.

A great place to explore tangles and to view tutorials and step-out directions is TanglePatterns.com

Tangleation

A variation of a tangle by itself or in combination with one or more tangles. Basic tangles are like paint out of a tube. Tangleations are the result of altering a tangle, or mixing one or more basic tangles together in different proportions.

Tile

The paper squares and rectangles on which one creates Zentangle art. They are called tiles because they can be assembled into mosaics. The new 2-inch square tiles are called "Bijou."  Black tiles are Arches brand black cover paper, 100% cotton, mould made 250 gram, and "Renaissance" tiles are tan in color, made from BFK Rives brand , 100% cotton rag, mould made 280 gsm paper. Round tiles are called Zendalas, and come in white, black and tan. ATC- sized tiles are also available. Some tiles come "pre-strung", meaning you do not need to draw a string.
